Have you been stung by under-insured workmen? – looking for interview case studies for UK national newspaper?
Hi there,
I work for a public relations consultancy and currently working on a story for a UK national newspaper on the dangers of hiring workmen who are not properly insured.
I’m looking for case studies of people who have been stung/had an unpleasant experience with an underinsured workman who would be happy to be interviewed by a journalist (must be UK based).
We would be very happy to supply any volunteers with a £50 M&S voucher.
As an example of the kind of scenarios we are looking for might be someone who has recently (i.e. in the last year) hired a workman (e.g. builder, plumber, tree surgeon etc) without checking their insurance details, discovered they had accidentally caused damage to their property but then had to foot the repair bill themselves because the worker was not covered.

One of the reasons you never choose a builder on the strength of a knock on the door or an ad in yellow pages. Schemes such as the Trustmark scheme are set up for just this reason. One of the core criteria to join this scheme is that you must have appropriate levels of Employers Liability and Public Indemnity Insurance.
Most of the building associations and confederations insist on members holding Public Liability insurance before they can join and some offer warranties and dispute and mediation services if anything goes wrong after using one of their members. Choose builders who are members of the Federation of Master Builders or the National Federation of Builders as an example, and the builder will definitely be covered.

Personally, I have little sympathy with those who choose the cheapest cowboy and expect the same quality and standards as a builder who has taken the time, trouble and money to register with a bone fide Trade Association in an effort to prove his reliability and his credentials.
The old adage “You pay peanuts, you get monkeys” has never been proved wrong in the building trade.
